Climate Change Is A Global Time Bomb

QUICK READ: With emergency crews only just beginning to address the astronomical damage caused by tropical storm Helene, the next devastating storm is already on the way. And the worst storm to come? Trump’s Project 2025 in November unless we defeat it together.

BACKGROUND

With emergency crews just beginning to address the damage caused by Hurricane Helene, yet another devastating storm is on its way. Hurricane Milton could be the worst hurricane to hit Tampa Bay in 100 years. Now is the time to talk about climate change before the worst storm touches down in November: Trump’s Project 2025.

Project 2025 would damage U.S. international engagement, climate cooperation, and financing for the hardest hit global communities in favor of big oil and gas, and “wreak havoc on the nation’s ability to prepare for and respond to climate disasters.”

Additionally, Trump’s Project 2025:

  • Expands the use of coal, oil, and natural gas, increasing greenhouse gas emissions, intensifying climate change, and leading to extreme weather events;

  • Prioritizes economic growth over environmental protection;

  • Opposes “climate-smart” agricultural practices, reducing federal controls addressing climate change in favor state and local ones;

  • Restructures the  U.S. Global Change Research Program to weaken the scientific basis for climate action;

  • Eliminates U.S. participation in global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emission by withdrawing from the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change;

  • Ends U.S. aid to developing countries disproportionately affected by climate change, eliminating “climate reparations” funding and Social Cost of Climate (SCC) analysis of climate change’s economic damage;

  • Cuts government organizations working to combat climate change–NOAH, Clean Energy Corps, Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations, and ARPA-E.

  • Weakens Endangered Species Act, causing biodiversity loss.

Now is the moment to talk about climate change rather than letting yet another extreme weather incident get lost in the shuffle behind the next and the next news story. Climate change is a global time bomb that cannot be reversed if we continue to allow partisan differences to cloud our judgment and ignore the gravity of environmental devastation wrought by it.
