KILL THE MAGA MURDER BUDGET:THE LARGEST EVER UPWARD WEALTH TRANSFER

QUICK READ: The highly unpopular and un-American Maga Murder Budget passed the House 215-214 with no Democratic votes in the wee hours Thursday. If enacted, it would be the largest ever upward transfer of wealth. To prevent this attempt to decimate America’s social safety net to make the few at the top that much richer and to fund Trump’s unconstitutional mass deportation regime, the Senate must kill it.

BACKGROUND

Early Thursday morning, the MAGA House barely rammed through its largely unread 1116-page Project 2025 wish list—robbing working families to pad the pockets of the ultra-wealthy.

It dismantles the administrative state, defunds the safety net, neuters regulatory agencies, and consolidates corporate power—creating the largest upward transfer of wealth in American history at a time of increasing income inequality, when Trump’s tariffs are already making it harder for working families to make ends meet, and further harming our democracy, our economy, and our communities.

Slashing healthcare and food assistance and raising the cost of living for millions of Americans to pay for trillions in permanent tax cuts for the rich and billions to supercharge Trump’s mass deportation agenda is completely unconscionable:

15 million will lose health coverage, 11 million SNAP benefits, and 20 million children their eligibility for expanded Child Tax Credits;

Cuts to clean energy will cause higher electric bills

College will become even less affordable;

Housing costs will balloon;

Medicare will be cut by an estimated $500 billion to counteract the  massive debt increases, as PAYGO requires—further worsening people’s lives.

Hidden in its 1116 pages are other reprehensible provisions, many violating the Senate’s Byrd rule, ranging from fossil-fuel exploitation, IRA regulations and funding, Planned Parenthood and gender-affirming care, gun silencers, and college endowments to court contempt citations, non-federal regulation of AI, and Congressional controls over federal rule-making.

The Senate’s job is to weed them out and then kill the Murder Budget itself.

ACTION One: Call the Senate.

Script for Oregon Senators

SEN. MERKLEY: Portland office: 503-326-3386 | D.C. office: 202-224-3753

My name is [--] and I'm a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code].

MAGA Republicans, through backroom deals, just forced through the House a draconian bill that will kill thousands of Americans. At a time of increasing income inequality, when Trump’s tariffs are already making it harder for working families to make ends meet, robbing the poor to pay for tax cuts for the rich and for Trump’s unconstitutional mass deportation scheme is completely unconscionable. I expect you and your Democratic colleagues to commit as a body to bring all Senate business to a grinding halt—denying all calls for unanimous consent on everything, including mundane business, challenging all provisions that might possibly violate the Byrd rule, and using every tactic and parliamentary procedure to stop the GOP assault on the vital government services all Americans have the right to expect. You must also keep educating the American people about how the cruel and spiteful cuts will make their lives more difficult or even cut them short—using performative tactics to garner necessary media attention. Please do everything in your power to kill this bill

The reconciliation bill that passed the House by just one vote is morally corrupt. At a time of increasing income inequality, when Trump’s tariffs are making it harder for working families to make ends meet, it is completely inappropriate to demand draconian cuts to vital programs like Medicaid, Medicare (by triggering PAYGO), SNAP and student aid to pad the pockets of the ultra-rich and corporations. The bill is also filled with inappropriate provisions I expect you to agree to remove. Voters will not forget those who so callously disregard the welfare of the people they’re sworn to serve. I hope you will heed our pleas and block this unconscionable bill from becoming law.

Thank you so much for trying to slow down the reconciliation process, speaking out against the MAGA Murder Bill, proposing amendments to protect us all, and standing united in opposition, but working to defeat this bill is still required. From today forward, it is imperative that you take all possible steps, both in the House and at home, to educate all Oregonians, Democrats, Republicans, and Independents, about its calamitous provisions that will hurt all but the ultra-rich, being sure to connect the dots between working families’ losses and suffering and the enormous gains billionaires, like Trump and Musk, will accrue at these families’ expense.

I am aghast that you voted for the Republican reconciliation bill that strips healthcare and food assistance from the vast majority of your constituents to pay for the ultra-rich’s massive tax breaks. This bill will likely return to the House after the Senate makes changes. Voters will not forget those who so callously disregard the welfare of the people they’re sworn to serve. Unless you vote no on these dramatic cuts to lifesaving programs, I will do everything in my power to ensure you are not re-elected.
