BACKGROUND

Now is not the time for surrender. Democrats must unite and become an opposition party that exposes Trump’s lawlessness and his intention to destroy the social safety net on which ordinary Americans rely simply to benefit the billionaire oligarchs who funded his campaign.

 The Democratic Party at present seems adrift. Some even concede that Trump represents a living embodiment of our country. Trump is merely the worst symptom of a corrupt system that rewards the rich at the expense of everyone else.

 We must clarify the connections between the crises of today and the systemic causes of yesterday in order to determine the solutions we will champion.

 Some of the root causes of our economic and political problems include:

 

·      A Supreme Court that has ceased to represent majority opinions

·      Antidemocratic gerrymandering and a winner-takes-all electoral college

·      Failed Reagan era trickle-down economics that destroyed our middle class

·      Dark money masquerading as free speech corrupting our elections

·      Bailouts for banks not homeowners during the 2008 financial crisis

·      Medical care bankrupting families

·      Minority rule as the result of the racist and archaic filibuster

·      The relentless attack on unions

 

We need leaders who engage communities and fight for solutions alongside a strong grassroots movement to drive our way forward.

We must ensure that government works for working people.
